One Room Challenge: The Plan (Week 1)

Let’s pretend, for a moment, that I have been slowly making headway on our master bedroom since the #OneRoomChallenge kicked off last month. If you’ve never heard of it, the One Room Challenge is a six week design challenge featuring designers who complete a fully-designed room/space/outdoor space/project and blog about it.

When we moved into our house, like many of the rooms in it, our bedroom was yellow and looked like this.

Could be better, could be worse.

These toile curtains were driving me bananas!

Upon moving in, our first order of business was a fresh coat of paint in Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue. For Week One of the ORC, we hired an electrician to install this semi-flush mount ceiling pendant. Lack of overhead lighting in a bedroom drives me CRAZY and this ceiling lamp is the absolute best alternative to groping around blindly for the knob on a table lamp. Plus, I love the shape.

Love this light but need to do something about these mirrors. Not a fan of them over the bed and they just look ‘off’ lined up like that. Hmmm…

As you can see, our room hardly gets any natural light, so the ceiling fixture was key. Also in the low light, Palladian Blue gives green where I’ve seen it much more blue with lots of light.

Step two after moving in was to add a rug. We chose a big Dash and Albert blue and white cotton rug, which wasn’t my first choice as its a little too ‘matchy’ with the walls BUT we found it at a tent sale and it was practically free.. sooo too hard to resist! Here’s a bigger picture of the plan for the room.

Here’s what I have to accomplish over the Challenge:

Install ceiling light -DONE

Install new curtains in closet (or else organize the closet and remove them all together)

Find a new, small dresser for the corner of the room

Find art/paint something to go over the bed (the mirrors aren’t doing it for me!)

Refinish (sand/prime/sand/paint) our existing nightstands (a Craigslist find from years ago) with new paint and hardware

Replace bedside lamps or find lampshades for existing lamps

Figure out what to do about our existing dresser

Get a mirror for the room- right now, we don’t have one

Order fabric and blackout lining for new custom drapery panels

Actually sew new drapery panels

Not overwhelming at all… and definitely wishing I had signed up for the Instagram-only challenge to give myself less pressure on the blogging end! Playing serious catchup so expect a backlog of posts over the next few days along with a lightning speed flurry of activity to try to get this room finished up over the next week or two. AHHHHH!
